Uckers board with a chess timer

Uckers with a Chess Timer?

About a two years ago, we started thinking about how to update the game of Uckers and make it more modern and exciting. We discussed different things, like which rules to include, how the board should look, what your player profile would look like, and importantly, how long each game should last.

The simplest options were clear: we could set a time limit for the whole game, or we could add a timer for each player's turn. Then we had a another idea—what if we used a chess timer? This would give each player a set amount of time to complete the whole game. So, we found an old chess timer**, changed the batteries, and gave it a shot. It was awesome!

If you're playing on a physical board, here’s how it works: First, decide on a time for each player. We found that 20 minutes per player is ideal. Roll the dice to see who goes first. The player who doesn't go first starts the timer to count down the time for the first player. After each turn, the player hits the lever on the timer to switch the countdown to the other player’s clock.  If the game isn't finished before a player runs out of time, that player loses.

Here’s how it works within the Uckers.com app: first, select your rules and then choose the chess timer option - you can configure the timer for player limits of 20 to 40 minutes.  Start your game and keep an eye on the amount of time you have remaining.  If you run out of time, you lose the game, so it adds an exciting element to game play that you probably haven’t seen with Uckers before.

So, what’s the verdict?  If you’ve ever played chess with a chess timer, you will know that it limits the duration of the game to the total time selected for both players.  As the game progresses, the countdown becomes more of an incentive for rapid play and puts pressure on the player with the least time available.  If you like your Uckers fast and furious, we think this will be an innovation that you’ll love!

We think it's great - and hope that you feel intrigued enough to try it too.  Give us your feedback once you've experienced it with any further suggestions on how we might improve the game.

**  Actually, we downloaded an app - there are loads available and they work great when playing on a physical board.
